Forget Yaz and Ryan. How about Yaz and the Doctor?

A number of Doctor Who fans have been shipping Mandip Gill and Jodie Whittaker's characters, to the point where even Gill herself has heard about it.

Yaz and the Doctor have been getting along really well as companions, and there was even a moment when Yaz's mother in the episode 'Arachnids in the UK' wondered if they were an item.

"I'm aware of [the shipping] now, but at the time I was filming it, it was never a thing," Gill told Metro. "It must just have been natural chemistry between Jodie and myself.

"After it came out, I was like, 'Wow, I didn't even think that was a thing'. I didn't think it was a thing until I saw people mentioning it online. I think it is just a natural thing that can happen between friends, or who knows where it's going to go."

In the same interview, Gill praised showrunner Chris Chibnall and the writers for the success of series 11.

"The stories resonate through the characters. They're very relatable to modern society, and I think that's something we need to thank Chris Chibnall and the writing team for – that they're able to write something that can relate to so many people while having sci-fi in it," she said.

The show will return for series 12 in 2020, with both Gill and Whittaker back reprising their characters alongside Tosin Cole as Ryan and Bradley Walsh as Graham.

Doctor Who airs on BBC One in the UK and BBC America in the US.
