Doctor Who have released a new teaser image of actors David Tennant and Catherine Tate returning for the 60th anniversary specials.

David Tennant reprises his role as The Doctor, alongside Tate, who returns as Donna Noble, in three special episodes to mark the sci-fi show's milestone in November.

The official Doctor Who Instagram account shared four photos teasing the upcoming specials, alongside the caption: "The show is just beginning... ❤️❤️➕🔷 #DoctorWho".

The first still shows Tennant back as The Doctor, leaning out of the iconic Tardis, whilst the second image shows a group of furry creatures on a chair in what appears to be a cluttered bedroom. Though there's no confirmation if these creatures are good or bad.

How I Met Your Mother's Neil Patrick Harris appears in an extravagant tuxedo, top hat and cane in a third preview photo. The actor, whose show character remains unconfirmed, was announced as joining the Doctor Who cast in June.

Whilst details of his role remain under wraps, Patrick Harris hinted at playing a potential villain in the specials, in an Instagram post responding to his appointment.

"I’ll try my hardest to do my worst," read the caption. "This Doctor has no idea what’s in store. And even if he does… Who cares? Ha ha ha HA ha-ha-ha!"

In August, the Uncoupled star also described his role as "delicious" whilst appearing on the Variety podcast.

The final teaser image sees the long awaited reunion of Tate's Donna and Tennant's The Doctor. The two are seen clinging to each other in fear, but what are they so afraid of?

Other notable names starring in the three Doctor Who anniversary specials include Harry Potter actress Miriam Margolyes, the late Bernard Cribbins (who returned to portray Wilfred Mott before his passing in real-life) and Heartstopper star Yasmin Finney.

Doctor Who returns later in 2023 on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Meanwhile, in the US, the show airs on BBC America, with series 1-12 available on Max.
