Doctor warns of new COVID-19 variants amid New Year's parties

Health officials in Maryland fear another surge of COVID-19 cases amid looming New Year's celebrations. Maryland has seen a steady increase in cases leading up to the holidays, but it may be another week or so before the full impact of the back-to-back holidays is seen because people don't necessarily come up with symptoms from COVID-19 for a couple of days after exposure. Dr. Andrew Pekosz, of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, said the delay makes upcoming New Year's celebrations a little more concerning because people who don't yet have symptoms can still transmit COVID-19. And, there are other viruses -- colds and the flu -- still running rampant, and the symptoms can be hard to distinguish.
