Doctor Who's new trailer for its 2023 Christmas special offers new hints about companion Ruby Sunday's origin.

The teaser comes from the BBC's international distribution partner, Disney+, and features brand-new footage not included in the teaser that debuted after 'The Giggle' last Saturday.

This clip from 'The Church on Ruby Road' focuses on The Fifteenth Doctor's new companion, Ruby Sunday, who will be played by former Coronation Street actress Millie Gibson beginning on Christmas Day.

It was previously revealed that Ruby was a foundling and was named for the church where she was found as a newborn baby.

In this new footage, viewers can see a cloaked figure carrying Ruby to the church — before The Doctor is shown seemingly holding the baby who'll one day be his companion.

Ruby's origins are apparently tied to the arrival of The Doctor in her life, as he hints in some cryptic comments.

"Let me sit you down and tell you a Christmas story," The Doctor says. "A story of chance, coincidence and luck."

The clip finishes with Ruby introducing The Doctor to her family — It's a Sin star Michelle Greenidge as Ruby's mum, Carla, and EastEnders' Angela Wynter as her nan, Cherry — though she's unsure how to explain her new friend.

The Doctor and Ruby may not have much time to determine how their destinies intertwine, as they'll be trying to sort out an invasion from a colony of space goblins. Ah, a classic Christmas conundrum!

Doctor Who's 'The Church on Ruby Road' will air on Christmas Day (December 25). The show airs on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere.
