Doctor Who star David Tennant sees his return to the Who-verse this year as his "one last shot" to reprise his role again before he becomes "too old".

The Good Omens actor originally appeared as the tenth Doctor in the hit BBC series between 2005 and 2010. Marking the show's 60th anniversary this year, Tennant is returning as the Fourteenth Doctor amid three TV specials, before passing the baton on to Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa, who was confirmed as the next Doctor in May last year.

Opening up on his anticipated Doctor Who comeback, Tennant told the Radio Times that he agreed to appear again before old age prevented his return as the Doctor.

"It’s a victory lap, in a way – you get to enjoy something that had meant so much to you, one last shot before you get too old to do it again," he said.

Tennant added that he was always keen to return, and that the idea grew after an initial chat with showrunner Russell T Davies.

"The specifics of coming back to Doctor Who took a bit of wrangling,” he says. "But we were always receptive to the notion.

"Initially, it was a casual conversation going, 'Wouldn’t it be fun to do a one-off?' Then Russell was back running the show and suddenly it could be something bigger."
