Doctor Who has unveiled the first look at the remodeled Sonic Screwdriver for David Tennant's Doctor.

The star is returning as the Fourteenth Doctor for three 60th anniversary Doctor Who specials airing this year, before Ncuti Gatwa takes over the TARDIS.

The BBC has unveiled both a promo shot and a teaser displaying a glossy silver shade for the device along with some gold trim. The sonic energy glows blue in this revamped Screwdriver.

The Doctor's favourite tool has helped him out of many a jam, whether the Time Lord pretends it's a weapon to scare off enemies or can even unlock a door during a corridor chase.

Patrick Troughton's second Doctor was the first incarnation to use the Sonic Screwdriver on screen, with the device eventually becoming one of the most recognisable aspects of the series.

Whenever the various versions of The Doctor actually get together for multi-Doctor stories, they can coordinate their Sonics for an energy blast capable of repelling even a Dalek.

Showrunner Russell T Davies has unveiled this makeover for the device ahead of the show celebrating its 60th anniversary later in the year.

David Tennant and Catherine Tate will reunite for a trio of special episodes, where they will be opposed by a mysterious villain played by Neil Patrick Harris.

Gatwa will take over residency of the TARDIS in this year's Christmas special, and will soon be joined by Coronation Street's Millie Gibson as new companion Ruby Sunday.

It was confirmed earlier this week that Doctor Who has also wrapped filming on Gatwa's first full series, which is expected to air next year.

Doctor Who returns later in 2023 on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Meanwhile, in the US, the show airs on BBC America, with series 1-12 available on Max.
