Ncuti Gatwa has joined the cast for a new television drama, with the Doctor Who star set to front a drama inspired by a classic novel.

In an interview with Deadline, House Productions co-CEOs Juliette Howell and Tessa Ross outlined the company’s upcoming projects, one of which sees Gatwa star in a series inspired by Patricia Highsmith’s Strangers on a Train.

As opposed to the original novel and Alfred Hitchcock’s 1951 adaptation, the latest version will be set in Sitges, Spain, with the script currently being written.

Before then, Gatwa will embark on his first collection of adventures as the iconic Time Lord, with the BBC show set to return later this year for its fourteenth series following four specials at the tail end of 2023.

Gatwa, who has also appeared in Sex Education, previously spoke with Digital Spy and other media about what he wanted to bring to the role, saying: “It's such a hard question to answer because the role of The Doctor is everything anyway.

“They're an explorer that has been around for a billion years, and so they have so many quirks and intricacies in life. [They have] rage and joy, and they're just full of the whole kaleidoscope of emotions. I guess just myself. My Black and beautiful self.”

Gatwa made his debut as the Doctor opposite David Tennant, who had reprised his role as the Time Lord, but the latter revealed that his stint was now done, saying: “The door is not any more open than it ever was, because in Doctor Who if you want to bring someone back, there are endless ways of doing it. It's very much the end of the story.”

Doctor Who will return for its 14th series in May, airing on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Classic episodes of Doctor Who are available on BBC iPlayer in the UK.
