Doctor Who's Ncuti Gatwa teases new dynamic for the companions

Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa has teased a new dynamic for the show's companions.

The upcoming season will see Gatwa's Doctor adventure with Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson), with Varada Sethu's second companion joining the TARDIS for the following season.

Teasing Sethu joining the fray, Gatwa told Radio Times: "We’re all really hot," before Gibson added: "It’s a really hot TARDIS."

Speaking further about the dynamic as a trio, Gatwa elaborated: "No, it’s fun, it’s been such an amazing energy, dynamic into the TARDIS, and there’s three of us now, so you’re safe everyone! Safe at home."

Sethu's addition to the cast was officially confirmed earlier this month after the star was spotted filming with Gatwa earlier in 2024.

"I feel like the luckiest person in the world. It is such an honour to be a part of the Whoniverse, and I'm so grateful to the whole Doctor Who family – because that is what they are – for welcoming me with open arms and making me feel so at home," Sethu said.

"I couldn't ask for a better team than Ncuti and Millie to be on this adventure with, this is SO much fun!”

Showrunner Russell T Davies subsequently cleared up confusion after reports claimed that Sethu would be replacing Gibson in the second season.

"[Gibson is] not leaving. Not at all. We were ordered for two years of a series off Disney, and we're delivering two years, and the Ruby Sunday story literally spans those two years," he told SFX Magazine.

"We are planning [to] shoot the [season 2] finale in which Ruby has the most magnificent scenes, and Millie, it's some of [her] most challenging material yet, isn't it? It will all make sense once you see it play out."

Doctor Who will return for its 14th series on May 11 at midnight, airing on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Classic episodes of Doctor Who are available on BBC iPlayer in the UK.
