Documentary on cultural traditions passed down through food to be screened Tuesday

The Virginia Folklife Program will screen the film “In Good Keeping” on Tuesday at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art.

The documentary showcases 18 artists and their apprentices from the 2021-22 apprenticeship class of Virginia Folklife, a state program based in Charlottesville.

The documentary includes Lelis Garcia Olaes, who apprenticed her son Ken Garcia Olaes in Filipino baking; he owns Angie’s Bakery in Virginia Beach. They were featured in National Geographic magazine recently about the cultural influence of the Filipino community in Virginia Beach.

The film also presents Lemlem Gebray of Richmond, who trained her daughters to perform an Ethiopian coffee ceremony.

The opening reception will include baked goods from Angie’s Bakery and other light refreshments. The Gebray family will also demonstrate the coffee ceremony. A panel discussion with the artists and filmmaker will follow the screening.
