Dodge returning to Woodward Dream Cruise, capping week of unveilings, Roadkill Nights

Dodge is returning to the Woodward Dream Cruise.

The Stellantis brand, which thrives on a reputation of heavy horsepower, said in a news release that it will once again host a display during the area's premier one-day car culture showcase, this year scheduled for Aug. 20.

Details on what Dodge has planned for the 2022 Dream Cruise haven't been released, but the "full brand display" will be in Bloomfield Township, near Pontiac, according to Darren Jacobs, a company spokesman.

It'll be the brand's first display at the Dream Cruise since 2019, when it had one in Pontiac, Jacobs said. Prior to that, Dodge had a display for years in Royal Oak at 13 Mile and Woodward, the former home of Northwood Shopping Center, later redeveloped as Woodward Corners by Beaumont, but that ended in 2016.

The Dream Cruise showing will cap a week of big Dodge events — the automaker is dubbing it "Speed Week" — along the Woodward corridor.

Those events are to include three nights of "worldwide Dodge brand product unveils" Aug. 15-17 for members of the media and invited guests, according to the news release.

The product unveilings are expected to include a look at the long-awaited Dodge Hornet, which would align with timing that Dodge brand CEO Tim Kuniskis discussed in April, as well as a Dodge electric concept vehicle.

The Hornet, which will resurrect a legendary automotive name dating to the Hudsons of the 1950s, is believed to share an architecture with the Italian-built Alfa Romeo Tonale, coming to the United States next year.

The news release tied the week's events to going "wide open throttle" on the brand's two-year business plan, which it calls "Never Lift," a reference to not taking one's foot off the accelerator. The next two years will be key for Dodge as it rolls out the beginnings of its electrification strategy and launches its first electric muscle car.

“There’s no better place to unveil a new performance direction for the Dodge brand than right on Woodward Avenue in metro Detroit, with tens of thousands of our closest fans and friends,” Kuniskis said in the release. "All I can say is the future of our brand will be on display during Dodge Speed Week, and we’re throwing open our garage doors so our fans can get a peek for themselves."

Perhaps in a bit of foreshadowing, Kuniskis noted that "it’s going to be an electric summer for Dodge.”

All of the festivities begin Aug. 13 with MotorTrend Presents Roadkill Nights Powered by Dodge at M1 Concourse in Pontiac. The legal street drag racing event held on a closed section of Woodward Avenue will mark its seventh year. More than 38,000 people came out for last year's Roadkill Nights, according to the company.
