The Washington Football Team reportedly placed the franchise tag on RG Brandon Scherff on Monday night, making it the second-straight season that they did so. There was some belief that the two parties would be able to reach an agreement on a contract extension before the deadline to tag a player came, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Washington has some options now, and there is a belief that they will continue to try and reach an extension with the All-Pro right guard who was named to his fourth Pro-Bowl this season. For Scherff, it looks like he’s going to get some major money either way.

Scherff played on a franchise tag that was worth just more than $15 million in 2020, and he had another career year, being named Washington’s first All-Pro since 1996.

With the franchise tag in effect, Washington has at the very least locked Scherff down for this season, with an eye towards the future as well if they can reach an agreement.
