BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — If you are eligible to get Social Security benefits, does the state of Louisiana tax it?

Taxpayers are eligible for Social Security if they are 62 years or older or have a disability.

Louisiana does not tax Social Security benefits.

Other retirement benefits also can be excluded from state income tax. Annual retirement income exclusion allows taxpayers 65 years or older to exclude up to $6,000 from their taxable income.

Federal retirement benefits can be excluded in Louisiana, according to the Louisiana Department of Revenue.

State income tax return filing begins on Jan. 29 in Louisiana. Filing can be done electronically or using paper returns. The deadline for filing is May 15, 2024.
