When does Western Playland open? Here are details on admission prices, hours

Western Playland is gearing up to open for 2023 on Feb. 25. The park will be open from 2 to 7 p.m.

It will be exciting to see what the park, under new ownership, will have to offer. Traders Village Marketplaces, which operates three large, weekend flea markets and amusement parks in Texas, bought the park in November. So far, a new food menu is in the works.

And a new ride, the Fireball, also will be available. The amusement ride looks like a circle in which riders are taken through a series of heart pounding full-circle revolutions.

The park in Sunland Park, New Mexico, will open on weekends and have special hours during Spring Break. It will be open from 2 to 9 p.m. March 8-11, (with DJ Johnny Kage playing music on March 9); and March 15-18. On Sundays, including March 12 and 19, the park will be open from 3 to 8 p.m.

Pay-one-price admission bracelets, based on height and unlimited ride access, are $27.65 and $18.49, excluding fees. If you're 42 inches or taller, you'll be asked to pay the pricier option, and if you're 34-41 inches, you'll pay $18.49. Admission with no rides is $5.

Former owner Pat Thomson's grandfather Leo Hines and father, Wally Thomson, started Western Playland in El Paso County's Ascarate Park in 1960.

It moved to Sunland Park in 2006 after Thomson's relationship soured with his Ascarate landlord, El Paso County Commissioners Court. He was given land by the Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino owner for the amusement park.

The area's only amusement park was owned and operated by the same El Paso family for 62 years.
