‘Doesn’t cost $6,000 to replace’: Another driver complains about inflated windshield claim, skyrocketing insurance rates

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — In 2022, Marvin Shebroe says a crack in his windshield was repaired through his insurance company.

Nearly a year later, he says he received a call from someone who claimed to be with the auto glass company, wanting to fix the glass again, under a recall.

“I thought I was doing my due diligence by asking if there was going to be a charge for this,” Shebroe said. “They assured me there was not going to be a charge, that it was under the recall.”

Windshield replacement turns into $14,393 in claims and doubled premiums

Well, there was a charge after all.

He recently learned his insurance company, Farmers, was billed $6,108 for the second windshield. Marvin says his signature was forged on the work authorization. His insurance skyrocketed and he says he had to lower his coverage to afford it.

“Well, I was angry because that means I endorsed it,” he said. “Someone is representing myself as a fraud and I know auto glass doesn’t cost $6,000 to replace. $400 to $600 is the customary amount. Not $6,000.”

‘I feel very, very violated’: Complaints pile up against Florida-based adjustable bed company

Colleen Hernandez called Better Call Behnken about similar problem. Farmers Insurance was billed thousands for two windshields she was told were covered under a recall.

Both Marvin and Colleen’s invoices are from a company called the Florida AutoGlass Guys LLC, based in Sarasota. No one answers the company or phone or returns messages.

Farmers says they are looking into this and the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office is looking into Colleen’s case.
