‘Who doesn’t like a station house dog?’: Hamburg dispatch center takes in abandoned puppy during storm

HAMBURG, N.Y. (WIVB) — There’s a new face at the police dispatch center in Hamburg that’s making the job a little less “ruff.”

A few weeks ago the department rescued an abandoned puppy during the snowstorm.

“Who doesn’t like a station house dog? We’ve spoken about that for quite some time. We happened to find a perfect fit,” said Hamburg police lieutenant John Baker.

During the storm, “Paddy” was found on the side of the road with frostbite and a cut on her face.

“We don’t know if she was abandoned or what. We posted her on social media fully expecting someone to claim her, often times that’s how it goes,” Baker said.

A few weeks went by, and no one did. The department decided to keep her.

“It was during a stressful time for us because it was during a storm. She was introduced right to us and she made an immediate impact. Morale and everyone’s demeaner has been really positive,” Hamburg emergency management coordinator Sean Crotty said.

“Police officers do a lot of things that do cause stress, having a dog here, is the exact opposite of that,” Baker said. “There’s no stress with a dog, everyone is in a good mood with a dog.”

For Paddy, she’s right at home.

“With the weather and the way she was dumped there, I believe she deserves a great home,” Baker said. “I think she’s spoiled here. She gets more attention than most dogs ever would and it’s nice that she has a nice place to live now.”
