Dog chasing lizard falls off 170-foot cliff in Kentucky — and survives, officials say
A dog took a tumble down a 170-foot cliff at the Red River Gorge in Kentucky — and lived to tell about it with just some minor cuts.
Officials with the Wolfe County Search and Rescue Team were dispatched to Frog’s Head in the gorge on Sunday for reports of a dog who fell off a cliff. The dog, Tyson, was chasing a lizard over the edge of the cliff when he went over, rescuers said.
When rescuers got to the base of the cliff, they found a group of hikers who said they had seen a dog without a leash roaming the area, according to a news release. The rescuers made contact with Tyson’s owner, who showed them a photo of the pit bull mix.
To their “absolute amazement,” photos they were shown matched the description of the dog seen at the base, the search and rescue team said. The team split up to locate Tyson, who “was quickly found for a joyful reunion,” according to rescuers.
“How Tyson survived (a) 170’ fall is nothing short of miraculous and he was basically unhurt,” the search and rescue team said. “This has certainly been a week of miracles in the Red River Gorge.”
Tyson’s owner, Tyler Stinson, shared a photo on the Facebook post of Tyson all smiles in the back of his vehicle. Stinson said his dog’s scans came back clean with no cuts or internal injuries.
“Absolute miracle!!” Stinson said on Facebook.
He also thanked the rescuers and the hikers who assisted them.
“To the hikers that helped find the collar thank you so so much!! You all gave me hope that was very much needed,” Stinson said. “Thank you to the rescue team for connecting with individuals and getting eyes on Tyson!!”
It was the second rescue at Red River Gorge officials described as a “miracle” in less than 10 days. Earlier this month, a 4-year-old boy survived a 70-foot fall, the Herald-Leader reported.
Earlier this month, WKYT reported Wolfe Search Search and Rescue had a record-breaking 67 rescues so far in 2021.
