Dog goes above and beyond to help injured friend

Imagine driving in the middle of nowhere. Row upon row of cornfields frame the endless stretch of highway. The only sign of civilization is the odd house or two every 100 acres.

Well, that is where Samantha Zimmer, a dog rescuer from Houston, Texas, discovered a dedicated pup and his injured friend.

"One of my friends got a message to her rescue page about a dog in Dayton that had been hit by a car and him and his little friend had been sitting out there since 11 o'clock that morning," said Samantha. "I didn't see the post until closer to two or three o'clock. And, um, that's when we saw that the dog was injured and we were gonna rush out there to go see if we could save him."

Samantha and her fiancé made the one-hour trip to Dayton, Texas, a town about an hour outside of Houston.

When they arrived on the scene, they were met by a small and scrappy dog standing in the middle of the road. The dog came up to them as if asking for help. And it didn't take long to find out why. Several feet away, a much larger dog covered in road rash was lying in a ditch. It was obvious he needed immediate medical care. Samantha and her fiance didn't waste any time getting both dogs loaded safely into their car.

Back in Houston, both dogs were taken to the veterinarian and treated for their ailments. Today, both dogs are living their best lives in their new foster homes. And next month, they will be adopted together by a family in Wisconsin.
