Dog-leash restrictions enacted on some Boulder open space trails

Aug. 16—Seasonal dog-leash restrictions are in effect on some Boulder open space trails to minimize dog and bear encounters.

The restrictions will apply to Skunk Canyon up to the Mesa Trail, portions of the Gregory Canyon Trail, Saddle Rock and Amphitheater trails and the upper part of Doudy Draw Trail, according to a news release. The restrictions were enacted Tuesday and will be enforced through Nov. 1.

"City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks institutes leash restrictions on certain trails every year because of potential dog-wildlife encounters," the release said. "The department's dog leash requirement is intended to minimize dog-bear encounters and is timed to coincide with the period of the year when bears are most active."

The release said mid-August is when bears forage for food in preparation for hibernation and repeated disturbance of feeding bears could decrease their success in surviving over the winter, causing them to come into the city for food.

In addition to putting dogs on leashes for their safety, the release asks people to not litter to prevent bears from coming into more populated areas.

The release reminds residents to stay calm, keep their distance and slowly and calmly leave the area while talking aloud if they come across a bear. If attacked, the release recommends people fight back as black bears have been driven away when people fight with rocks, sticks, binoculars or hands.
