Pet owner discovers rescue dog 'only speaks Spanish': 'We figured it out'

A woman had a laugh when she discovered her well-behaved rescue dog is fluent in Spanish.

Kalee McGee revealed she adopted Max, a 4-year-old Chihuahua, from a shelter. There was very little information about the dog, but she noticed that he had clearly been trained because of his behavior. However, any time McGee gave the dog a command, the Chihuahua didn’t respond.

Create sweet treats with the kids this holiday season with help from Walmart:

“He sits when you have a treat in your hand, he knows what a crate is and he walks really well on a leash. So it seems he has some training — but he won’t listen to us,” she explained.

McGee spent weeks trying to get Max to listen or understand why he wouldn’t.

“We figured it out. He only speaks Spanish. Our little Chihuahua doesn’t know English,” she said.

Then, she gave a demonstration. When she told the dog, “Max, come,” he stared blankly at her. But when she said, “Max, aquí,” he walked right up to her. “McGee then told him “buen chico” (good boy) to praise him. Max didn’t respond to “sit,” but he sat right down when she said “siéntate.

Of course, McGee couldn’t stop laughing at the absurdity of the situation. But she did say she wanted to learn more Spanish to better communicate with Max.

“The thought of a person learning a new language for their new pup literally has me tearing up,” someone commented.

“Call him ‘papa‘ or ‘mijo,’ he probably knows those as terms of endearment,” another suggested.

“This happened with my dog. He only knew commands in Vietnamese,” a user shared.
