New dog parks opening soon in Parrish while Palmetto park closes temporarily

Puppies in Parrish will soon have a new reason to wag their tails.

Manatee County Government said in a news release Thursday that two new dog parks would be built in the Parrish community by the end of the month, and a nearby dog park will be closing temporarily.

Ola Mae Sims Park in Parrish, 11800 Erie Road, is getting two new dog parks. According to the press release, one park will be for large dogs, while the other will be for little dogs.

Pavilion coverings, dog agility courses, water hoses, and fountains will be installed in the parks.

The park has been under construction for most of May, and it is set to open to residents and their pets on May 26.

The Buffalo Creek Dog Park, 7550 69th St. E. in Palmetto, will close temporarily starting May 30 to make way for the installation of a new soccer field at Buffalo Creek Park.

The new soccer field is expected to be installed and ready for league play by Labor Day in September.

Residents who visit the Buffalo Creek Dog Park are encouraged to use the new dog parks at Ola Mae Sims Park until the renovation is done. The parks are only a 6-minute drive apart.

“This is a great thing for our Parrish area,” District 1 Commissioner James Satcher said in a news release. “Creating a new dedicated dog park, while at the same time expanding opportunities for soccer players, is a win-win.”
