Dog show to fund public art in Waynesville

Sep. 14—The Public Art Commission is once again hosting a dog show to raise money for public art in Waynesville.

All dogs and their owners are welcome to compete in categories such as "Best Trick," "Best Catcher," "Best Owner/Dog Look Alike" and more. There is also a "Best Plott Hound" category in honor of the breed native to Haywood County.

Prizes will be up for grabs and include monetary gifts, gift certificates, frisbees, treats, grooming supplies and dog training coupons.

Jesse Fowler, Assistant Town Manager, says sponsors of the dog show have already provided enough money to finish paying off "The Plott Hound," a Hazelwood Ave. sculpture dedicated in 2017.

The rest of the money raised will fund the town's next piece of public art. Although the Public Art Commission is still nailing down what that piece of artwork will be, it will join a collection of 17 other pieces that aim to beautify public spaces and celebrate the town's cultural heritage.

The dog show will be held behind the HART Theater at 250 Pigeon Street from 5 — 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 19. There is a $25 entry fee per dog for three events.
