Dog tied to vehicle dragged for half a mile, driver charged

Steven Arndt claimed he forgot the dog was tied to his vehicle, Seneca County sheriff's deputies said.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A New York man is accused of driving a half-mile with his dog attached to his vehicle.

Steven H. Arndt, 60, of Waterloo is charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, a felony, carrying an animal in a cruel manner, and operating an unregistered motor vehicle, according to the Seneca County Sheriff's Office.

"The dog was dragged in excess of a half-mile before the vehicle was stopped" on Monday, deputies said in a release.

Arndt claimed he forgot the dog was tied to his vehicle, deputies said. The dog suffered "extensive" injuries, and was taken to a local veterinary hospital for treatment.

Deputies said the dog is expected to recover. They didn't reveal the extent of the dog's injuries.

Arndt was processed by deputies and released. He is scheduled to appear July 15 in Seneca Falls Town Court.
