Doggy daycare and groomer share the same roof in Volant

Dec. 18—Lynn McCown has loved dogs all his life.

The Volant resident said years ago when he had cancer, he was told he was unable to have children. So he and his wife Stacy view their dogs as their children.

When the Northwest Savings Bank office at 850 Main St. closed last year, McCown purchased the building and converted it into a doggy daycare.

"I thought a daycare would help in this area," McCown said.

The Barking Bank opened on July 10 and is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and by appointment only on weekends. There are no overnight stays and they can take bookings for half or a full day.

The facility is licensed for up to 25 dogs at a time and price packages for one, two, three or more dogs.

"We've been blessed," McCown said. "We're getting good clientele."

McCown said in addition to him and Stacy, some volunteers help out at the facility regularly.

"We just love dogs," McCown said.

The Barking Bank sells dog collars and bandanas, as well as treats from local companies Pawsitively Natural Puppy Treats and Walking Among Us.

McCown said the pair's first customer was Robby, the German Shepherd owned by resident Bridget Fry. Fry was the organizer of the PAW-looza event in April in the borough, which raised funds for both the Lawrence County Humane Society and Shenango Valley Animal Shelter.

Above The Barking Bank is Mosaic Canines Dog Grooming, open since June and run by groomer and borough resident Addison Jewell.

In addition to standard baths and brushing, Jewell offers de-matting, de-shedding, nail dremeling, teeth brushing, external anal gland expression and color services..
