Wondering what to do in Abilene this weekend.

Doggone it, there is something unique.

The annual Abilene Kennel Club Dog Shows are this weekend at the Taylor County Expo Center.

A highlight will be the the puppy competition, which will feature Frenchies (French Bulldogs) of Cindy Knox, who is the show chairperson.

Her two puppies are half-sisters to Winston, shown by dog handler Perry Payson. Winston won Reserve Best in Show at the world famous Westminster Dog Show in 2022 and won in the Non-Sporting group this year.

He was Best in Show at the local show in 2022.

His young half-sisters represent him here this year.

Entry list is near 800 dogs.

There is no spectator admission to either the conformation (dog show), which is in the Taylor County Coliseum, or to the obedience and rally in the Display Building.

Show hours are 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 6 a.m.-7 p.m. Sunday.

Dog breeds range from A to Y, from affenpoos to Yorkshire Terriers.

APAC has 'Dreams'

Abilene Performing Arts Company will present "Dreams a Million" at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Abilene Convention Center, 1100 North Sixth St.

All students enrolled in APAC programs in dance and musical theater will be featured in this year-end production.

Admission is $10 per person,

Billy Joel at Potosi Live (sort of)

"Piano Man: The Billy Joel Experience" will be offered Saturday evening at Potosi Live, 897 FM 1750.

Tim George performs as Joel, bringing such hits as "Piano Man," "Only the Good Die Young," "For the Longest Time" and "It's Only Rock and Roll to Me."

He will be accompanied by a band, presenting a Joel concert as if the pianist were here.

Doors open at 7 p.m. Cost is $25 per person.

Downtown stuff to do

  • Abilene StrEATs, an evening event with New Orleans theme and benefitting United Way of Abilene, is scheduled Saturday. Individual tickets are $200. Got to unitedwayabilene.org for information.

  • "Saturday Shootouts" is scheduled from noon-1 p.m. Saturday on the parade grounds at Frontier Texas! The event is based on a true shootout in 1884 on nearby Pine Street. It's a free event.
