While some fruits such as apples, cucumbers and bananas are safe and even healthy for dogs to eat, others can be harmful and even toxic to dogs.

Can dogs eat grapes?

According to the American Kennel Club, dogs should never eat grapes or raisins. Even a single grape or raisin can put your pet's health at risk.

While the specific substance in the fruit is unknown, grapes are highly toxic for dogs and can cause sudden kidney failure that can be lethal to dogs of all breeds, ages and sizes.

Steps to take if your dog eats a grape

If your dog has ingested a grape, it is important to get them treated immediately. According to the AKC, you should contact your veterinarian who may suggest you induce vomiting. Do not attempt to induce vomiting if you do not know what your dog has eaten or if your dog is in distress or unctuous.

Signs of toxic injection

According to the AKC, these are symptoms your dog may exhibit if they ingested a grape:

  • Appetite loss

  • Lethargy

  • Vomiting within a few hours

  • Diarrhea within a few hours

  • Kidney failure

  • Increased thirst

  • Increased urine diminished amount or complete cessation

  • Abdominal pain

  • Dehydration

To determine if your dog is dehydrated gently pull the skin on the back of your dog’s head, AKC says. If your pet is not dehydrated, it should spring back right away.
