Interested in adopting a pet — or just gazing at some cuddly canines? There are dozens of great dogs up for adoption at animal shelters in and around Portland.

Animal shelters work hard to care for unhoused pets and connect them to loving homes. Hoodline used data from Petfinder to power this roundup of dogs currently available for adoption.

(Details like pet availability, training, vaccinations and other features are based on data provided by Petfinder and may be subject to change; contact the shelter for the latest information.)

Patch, chihuahua and Jack Russell terrier mix

Patch is a lovable male chihuahua and Jack Russell terrier mix in the care of Northwest Animal Companions.

Patch is the life of the party — he's happy to keep company with kids, dogs or cats. He's already house-trained. He has all of his shots, and he is neutered.

This cute little guy is about 10 pounds and as friendly as they come. He will seek out children to play with, and enjoys the company of adults as well. He's great with friendly dogs and even wants cats to befriend him. Patch was caught as an injured stray who went into rescue after being hit by a car. He had surgery to repair the fracture in his leg. He is now healed — and is running and playing with the best of them. His foster tells us that Patch loves to play with dogs, kids and cats — and loves to play fetch.

Pickles, dachshund

Pickles is a sweet male dachshund dog being kept at Oregon Dachshund Rescue Inc.

Pickles will do best with an owner who has time to bond with him. He will need a home free of other dogs. He does do well with kids. Have no fear: He has already house-trained. His vaccinations are up to date, and he's neutered.

Pickles is a four-year-old, short hair dark dapple, 10 pound Doxie. He is neutered and up to date on vaccines. He travels well in the car, knows basic commands (very treat motivated), and is leash and potty trained. He even comes with his own painting. He gets along with kids, but doesn't do well with other dogs or cats. He may have some anxiety but has meds that help. Pickles absolutely loves going for walks (used to three walks per day), and will even sit by the door and stare at you to let you know he wants to go for a walk. Also loves to do puzzle toys, treat training, fetch and tug-of-rope, and especially enjoys sunbathing. This little gentleman likes to sleep in but when he's ready he will get up. He is so handsome, happy and healthy, now he just needs a new loving forever home so he can live happily ever after. Pickles will do best in a family with a stay at home parent (work from home or retired) and only older children (over age 12), who are familiar with the special needs of Dachshunds.

Remmy, Weimaraner and Labrador retriever mix

Remmy is an adorable male Weimaraner and Labrador retriever mix currently housed at Oregon Weimaraner Rescue.

Remmy is patient, and he plays well with children. He is already house-trained. He's already vaccinated and neutered.

Remmy is a wonderful dog. We've gotten to know so much about his loving and entertaining personality while in foster. He is predominantly Weimaraner but the humane society where we pulled him was told he has Lab in him as well. He is good with other dogs outside the home, and even if they visit in his backyard but prefers being the only one in the home to get all the attention. Remmy loves children and adults and is very easy to care for and love.

Maggie Mae, Rottweiler and Doberman pinscher mix

Maggie Mae is a female Rottweiler and Doberman pinscher mix currently residing at Family Dogs New Life Shelter.

Maggie Mae will get along great with your other dogs. She is looking for a cat-free home. She's mastered her house-training etiquette. She already has all of her shots, and she is spayed.

Here's what Maggie Mae's friends at Family Dogs New Life Shelter think of her:

This pretty young gal you see goes by the name of Maggie Mae. She is a sweetheart all the way. A little shy at first, but it doesn’t take long before you’ll see her cuddle and play. She is A-OK with other dogs, and sturdy children six-plus, too — hip hip hooray! But them cats best stay away. Give her plenty of guidance, training and love every day, and she will continue to grow into the perfect best friend who’ll never betray. She is housebroken already and crate trained too, so she'd like to stay in her crate while you’re away.
