WEST OLIVE — Nearly three months after being rescued from unsafe living conditions, dogs recovered from Cober’s Canine Rescue are ready to find their forever homes.

According to a social media post from Harbor Humane Society, 14 dogs taken in by the shelter after rescue from Cober’s will be available for adoption later this week. Until now, the dogs were considered live evidence and weren’t able to be adopted out.

“Finally! After 83 days of being held in our care as live evidence, the forfeiture order for the Cober's Canine dogs has come through,” Harbor Humane posted. “The surviving dogs will be made available later this week and will be looking for their forever homes.”

Cober’s Canine Rescue owner Lisa Cober was arrested on animal cruelty and abandonment charges after authorities seized 78 dogs from her property Jan. 30.

Police responded to a tip from Pound Buddies Animal Shelter that “many animals” were living at the residence in Norton Shores. Nearly 80 dogs were found in unfit living conditions. Dogs rescued from the home were housed at Pound Buddies and Harbor Humane.

Of the 20 dogs and puppies that came to Harbor Humane, six puppies later died of distemper.

“We honor their lives and we are sad they were not able to be here today to live happily ever after,” the group wrote. “As the criminal case against Lisa Cober continues, we hope justice will be served and these lives were not lost in vain. However, we can rest just a little easier knowing that the surviving pups can never return to her care.”

A criminal case against Cober is currently working its way through the 14th Circuit Court in Muskegon County. Online court records don't list a date for further action as of Tuesday, April 25. Cober is currently out on bond.
