Doing dry January? These New England breweries serve non-alcoholic beer.

It's that time of year again − "dry January" − when huge swaths of drinking-age adults temporarily give up alcohol for the month.

Last year, more than one-third of U.S. adults took part in the month-long abstention from alcohol, according to CGA, a company that researches the food and drinks market. That was a significant increase from 2019 − showing the movement to go booze-free for 31 days as a reset is growing in popularity.

Not consuming alcohol for a month can have far-reaching health benefits, according to a study published in BMJ Open. But the annual "dry January" fad also brings plenty of conversation about the relationship between humans and alcohol.

Are you trying Dry January? Here's how to keep healthy habits going all year

Are you participating in dry January but still hoping to have something more to drink than water or soda? We compiled a list of breweries that serve non-alcoholic beer, a movement that's gaining steam in its own right. Even Sam Adams has broken into the non-alcoholic sphere. The global non-alcoholic beer market grew to $22 billion in 2022, according to GMI Insights, and could reach $40 billion by 2032.

This month, check out these New England breweries for a booze-free refreshment.

Woodland Farms Brewery in Kittery, Maine

Woodland Farms Brewery in Kittery, Maine, has gone big with non-alcoholic beer since launching its first non-alcoholic IPA two years ago, and it now makes up a huge portion of its sales.

On its website, the brewery touts its non-alcoholic brews as "low calorie, low carb, less than 0.5% alcohol and brewed with Maine grown local ingredients."

“I like to go out and have a couple of beers with friends, but I like to make sure I can still drive home," Woodland Farms' co-owner Patrick Rowan said in 2021. "If we're out for two or three hours, after two beers I can switch over to a non-alcoholic beer. It really still allows you to go out and enjoy the social aspect of drinking."

Woodland Farms currently offers five different types of non-alcoholic beer, including two IPAs, a sour, wheat and stout. The beers are available both in cans and on tap.

Athletic Brewing was the first of its kind in the country and is one of only two facilities dedicated to non-alcoholic beer in the world. It distributes its beer widely in addition to serving at its Connecticut taproom. Brews include IPAs, a witbier, golden ale, lager and ESB.

For every product purchased, Athletic Brewing donates 2% of sales to protecting and restoring local trails.

Connecticut's Two Roads Brewing Company currently offers a non-alcoholic "juicy IPA," described as full-bodied and flavorful at just 70 calories a can. It's the brewery's first go at a non-alcoholic brew.

"The non-alcoholic beverage world has taken off in the last few years," Two Roads wrote in its announcement of the new IPA. "With a focus on health and wellness, non-alcoholic beverages align seamlessly with this mindset. Going out to the bar doesn’t mean you have to slam a few beers and get a little buzzed, now you can slam a few beers and hang with the crew without the concern of calories or getting home safely."

Moon Hill Brewery in Gardner, Massachusetts

It's not a beer, but it's another non-alcoholic option. Inspired by Dry January, Moon Hill Brewery, located in the Gardner Ale House in Gardner, Massachusetts, created a non-alcoholic craft seltzer beverage to take the pressure off social drinking.
