DOJ announces Purdue Pharma's plea deal in opioid probe

"The global settlement announced today involves the company pleading guilty to three felony counts for defrauding the United States and violating the anti kickback statute from 2009 to 2017," U.S. Deputy Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen said.

In a far-reaching agreement unveiled on Wednesday, Purdue formally admitted to criminal conduct related to distribution of its painkillers.

The wealthy Sackler family, which owns Purdue, agreed to pay a separate $225 million civili penalty, as well as sever ties with Purdue, which is currently being reorganized in bankruptcy court.

A bankruptcy judge has to approve the settlement.
