DOJ identifies person fatally shot by Outagamie County deputy April 12 in Grand Chute

GRAND CHUTE – The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation has identified the person who was shot by an Outagamie County Sheriff's sergeant April 12 and the officers involved.

The person shot, William Jae Kil Nelson, 22, died of his injuries. The officer, Outagamie County Sheriff's Sgt. Ellis Brooks, remains on administrative leave, per department policy, while the DCI's investigation continues.

According to the state Department of Justice:

  • At 5:56 p.m. April 12, deputies from the Outagamie County Sheriff's Office responded to a vehicle crash in the 2800 block of West Prospect Avenue.

  • When they arrived, deputies saw Nelson armed with a knife.

  • Outagamie County Sheriff's Deputy Noah Yeck, who has 1½ years of law enforcement experience, tried to use a taser on Nelson unsuccessfully.

  • Brooks, who has 10 years of experience in law enforcement, then shot Nelson. Life-saving measures were attempted, and Nelson was taken to a hospital, where he later died of his injuries.

  • No law enforcement officers were injured in the incident.

An investigation into the incident continues.
