The Dolphins officially added defensive end Trey Flowers on Monday.

Miami also let go from the roster a total of 13 players, including veteran running back Sony Michel and wide receiver Mohamed Sanu.

Flowers has played four seasons with the Patriots and three with the Lions.

Flowers, 29, is very familiar with Miami's defensive scheme. At 6-foor-2, 265 pounds, Flowers joins excellent edge/end rotation.

He's averaged more than 5 sacks last 6 seasons and will provide important insurance in the event Andrew Van Ginkel and/or Brennan Scarlett aren't available to start the season.

Michel, who grew up in Plantation, played three seasons with the Patriots and one with the Rams. He was signed to be Miami's third back, but he did not outplay Myles Gaskin or Salvon Ahmed in the summer.

Michel, 27, was supposed to be an inside complement to Chase Edmonds and Raheem Mostert. But all of Miami's backs can catch and can run outside zone and inside zone.

The Dolphins also have a great deal of depth at receiver. That's why Sanu, 33, was squeezed out.

Miami still has to decide who, if anyone, to keep beyond Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, Cedrick Wilson, Erik Ezukanma and Trent Sherfield.

It's possible Lynn Bowden or even River Cracraft could make the roster, though it's certainly not guaranteed.

Sanu, 6-foot-2, 210 pounds, has had success playing for coach Mike McDaniel in San Francisco.

None of Miami's transactions on Monday were truly surprising.

The Dolphins let go offensive linemen Adam Pankey and Blaise Andries and running backs Gerrid Doaks and ZaQuandre White.

Defensively, they let go linebackers Darius Hodge (waived/injured), defensive linemen Niles Scott and Owen Carney and defensive backs Quincy Wilson, Elijah Hamilton and D'Angelo Ross.

Some of these players could end up on Miami's practice squad.

The Dolphins also placed linebacker Calvin Munson on injured reserve. They must get down to 53 players by Tuesday afternoon.
