Dolphins cornerback Jamal Perry being ruled out against Rams 'is a shot to the team’

Miami Dolphins cornerback Jamal Perry will miss Sunday’s home game against the Los Angeles Rams because of a foot injury.

Perry, who didn’t practice on Wednesday, tested the injury on Thursday, working on a limited basis.

On Friday, the second-year player worked on the side with a trainer during practice, but coach Brian Flores said Perry won’t play against the Rams.

“His role is pretty deep on the team, but having him injured is a shot to the team. But that’s how the league works,” said Dolphins safety Eric Rowe on Perry being sidelined.

Perry, who has started one game as the Dolphins nickel cornerback this season, also serves as one of Miami’s top special teams performers. He’s been paired with receiver Mack Hollins as the team’s gunners on the punt coverage unit. The pair’s effectiveness getting down the field to cover punts is one of the reasons Miami has one of the NFL’s top performing special teams units.

Perry typically played 15-20 snaps a game on special teams.

Nik Needham has started three of the Dolphins' six games as Miami’s nickel cornerback, but Perry is worked into the defense in certain packages. It’s possible that Miami could use Noah Igbinoghene, the final of Miami’s three first-round picks, in his old role now that Byron Jones and Xavien Howard man the boundary spots.

Brandon Jones, the rookie safety the Dolphins drafted in the third-round, could also contribute in Miami’s nickel and dime package, and on special teams.
