CANTON – The Hall of Fame Village powered by Johnson Controls will include a dome.

The Hall of Fame Resort & Entertainment Co. has announced plans for a dome over the center for performance, which will house a turf field for football and soccer, as well as two basketball courts that can be used for volleyball. There also will be locker rooms, meeting areas and other amenities.

The center will be across the street and west of the Constellation Center for Excellence, which is at the west end of Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium.

The company also released artist's renderings of the sports facility.

The dome will rise about 80 feet — or about eight stories — and measure 290 feet by 345 feet. There will be just over 100,000 square feet of space under the dome, with 20,000 square feet dedicated to the locker rooms and meeting space.

Flooring will be available to cover the courts and turf field so that the building can be used for conventions, dinners, concerts and other events.

An 8,000-square-foot entry building will be on the east side of the dome, facing Champions Way, a street that is under construction. The building will house a ticket area, guest services and concessions, while providing access to the dome through pressure lock doors. A patio area with access to the building also is planned.

Dome offers flexibility

Hall of Fame Resort, which is developing the Hall of Fame Village campus, opted for the dome after initial plans called for a slightly larger building.

Carol Smith, senior vice president for special projects, said the dome offers more flexibility, can be constructed faster and is a better value. The option lowers costs and improves the construction schedule.

Anne Graffice, executive vice president of public affairs, said dome structures are being used more frequently by universities adding athletic structures.

Crews have been working to level the area where the performance center will be built, Smith said. Plans are to begin digging the building's foundations later in December. It's hoped that the structure will be finished before next August and festivities surrounding the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival.

The dome features the colors of Hall of Fame Village powered by Johnson Controls. The base is blue, while the dome will be light grey with a skylight at the top to let natural light into the building. The main space will be metal panels and glass, Smith said.

Hall of Fame Resort still is seeking a sponsor for the building. Constellation Energy, based in Baltimore, purchased naming rights for the Constellation Center for Excellence.

Hall of Fame Village development progressing

The Constellation building is being prepared for tenants, including a Starbucks, Smith said. The company expects to be announcing more tenants in the coming weeks.

Construction of a retail promenade that stretches north from the Constellation building, also is underway. That building will include a Shula's restaurant, a Helix eSports complex operated by Esports Entertainment Group, and a TopGolf Swing Suite affiliated with The Brew Kettle, a Northeast Ohio craft brewery.

Smith and Graffice said more tenants are lining up for the retail center. That project is targeted for completion in 2022.

A 180-room Tapestry by Hilton hotel and a water park also are part of the project. That work is expected to begin next year.
