From the Office of the Maryland Comptroller to Baltimore City Mayor Brandon Scott, officials are circulating photos of the darkened letters that have yet to be taken down to warn Marylanders against St. Patrick’s Day bar-hopping and to remind them of tax filing deadlines and coronavirus restrictions.
The rusted remnants of the 70-year-old Domino sign looming 160 feet above the Inner Harbor resonate with Marylanders after what has been widely regarded as a dumpster fire of a year.
Weary Orioles fans are using the faded yellow letters to lament the beleaguered baseball team. Baltimore Berger Cookie loyalists are sending a sharp rebuke to the divisive new Charm City Cookies brand now sold at Whole Foods.
It’s unclear when crews will retire the last of the letters. Some were quick to notice the dot over the “i” disappear Friday — it’s found a new home at the Baltimore Museum of Industry.
The rest of the aged 20-by-70-foot sign, once replaced, is planned to light up for the first time Fourth of July.
Regardless, the memes will live on.
