There’s no statement like a fashion statement.

That’s exceptionally true in the sports world, where what a player wears to a game (or press conference) is just as newsworthy as what happens in the arena.

Heck, jerseys themselves are already statements. Whether it’s the Colin Kaepernick threads that have become commonplace at arenas around the country or the variety of NBA throwbacks at music festivals around the world.

Yet the custom hockey sweater worn by Saturday Night Live host Don Cheadle at the end of this week’s show was about as loud of a statement as anything said during the 90 minutes of sketch comedy.

Look, wearing a Soviet Union jersey just days before the 39th anniversary of the Miracle On Ice game is edgy to begin with, but once Cheadle turns around to show the back is emblazoned with “TRUMP 45”, there’s a whole new level of petty in play.

Now consider the man who is wearing the jersey is the same actor who portrays War Machine — otherwise known as one of the Avengers, ya know, the truth-seeking, crime-fighting, United States military hero inside a suit made by Tony Stark.

It wasn’t the only dig at the president that Saturday Night Live took this week. The show’s cold open mocked Trump’s declaration of a national emergency to build a wall at the southern border. As one would expect by now, this quickly got under the skin of the leader of the free world.

Chances are that Trump didn’t stay up to see Cheadle’s jersey choice at the end of the show. There is probably equally as good of a chance that this jersey will be duplicated and become a lot more prominent — at least, we assume, at Coachella.
