'Don Quixote,' fresh Forsythe: Boston Ballet's season is a mix of old favorites, new works

A William Forsythe world premiere and the return engagements of “Sleeping Beauty” and “Don Quixote” are highlights of Boston Ballet’s upcoming season.

The company’s 59th season features six productions and will run  Oct. 6 through June 2023.

“I am thrilled to show our audiences the humanity and raw beauty of our dancers with this incredibly diverse repertoire by some of the best choreographers of the past and present,” said Artistic Director Mikko Nissinen.

Kingston native Lauren Herfindahl is a member of the company. She joined Boston Ballet II in 2011 and was promoted to artist in 2013 and to second soloist in 2017.

The season opens with “My Obsession,” Oct. 6-16, a program of works by three celebrated choreographers: George Balanchine (“Apollo” and “Allegro Brillante”), Helen Pickett (“Tsukiyo”) and Stephen Galloway's “DEVIL’S/eye," which is set to music by the Rolling Stones.

The granddaddy of holiday entertainment in the city, “The Nutcracker,” returns Nov. 25 to Dec. 31 for its annual run of winter performances. Set to Tchaikovsky’s romantic score, the “Nutcracker” ballet is a whimsical Christmas fantasy about Clara, a little girl who flies off to a magical land when her nutcracker doll comes to life.

New Forsythe work will be on display in “As Anticipated,” Nov. 3-13. The production is a continuation of the long-term partnership between Forsythe, who’s like the Tom Brady of the dance world, and Boston Ballet.

The 2023 spring season begins with Rudolf Nureyev’s “Don Quixote,” March 16-26.  The work, featuring a spirited score by Ludwig Minkus, returns to Boston for the first time since 2012.

'Star Wars,' 'Harry Potter': Boston Pops to celebrate legendary composer John Williams

“Our Journey'' runs April 6-16 and will showcase Nanine Linning’s yet-to-be-named piece that is set to Debussy’s sweeping “La Mer.” Also on the bill is Justin Peck’s “Everywhere We Go,” a work for 25 dancers set to a nine-movement score by Sufjan Stevens. Peck is a Tony Award-winning choreographer (“Carousel”) and acting resident choreographer of New York City Ballet.

Back by popular demand, “The Sleeping Beauty” returns for two weeks, May 25 to June 4, with music by Tchaikovsky and choreography by Marius Petipa and Sir Frederick Ashton.
