Don’t believe the hype: Winter weather unlikely for Hampton Roads

The forecast for the week includes a chance of a “wintry mix” of snow and rain, but don’t expect any snow days.

There is a chance of light rainfall turning into snow Tuesday and early Wednesday morning, as well as Wednesday night and early Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Wakefield. However, total rainfall through Wednesday is only expected to be about 0.35 inches in Hampton Roads, which isn’t enough to cause any accumulation even if there’s snow, according to meteorologist Roman Miller.

“If precipitation comes down heavy enough and a little colder air than what we have in the forecast coming down, then maybe we get a brief mix in the northern most portions of Hampton Roads but it looks like it will mainly stay north of (Highway) 64,” Miller said. “It’s a pretty low chance right now for Hampton Roads actually seeing that wintry weather.”

Elsewhere in the state, forecasters haven’t yet pinned down an exact probability of snowfall, Miller added, but “it’s a pretty low chance.” The National Weather Service expects a maximum of 0.2 inches of snow for the central and northern regions of Virginia through Thursday.

As for the rest of the winter, experts aren’t seeing favorable conditions for snow through at least mid-February, Miller said.
