In a dramatic late twist to this summer's transfer window, sources in the White House say Donald Trump is ready to swoop for Greenland, which is currently owned by Denmark.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Trump has "expressed interest" in buying the world's biggest island, tasking his aides with sounding out the practicalities approaching the White House counsel "with varying degrees of seriousness".

Greenland has fairly sizeable deposits of coal and uranium, which might explain Trump's interest, but the request to buy it has blindsided his White House staff. The Washington Post reported that "the presidential request has bewildered aides, some of whom continue to believe it isn’t serious, but Trump has mentioned it for weeks".

Obviously this wouldn't be a personal purchase, and the United States has tried to pry Greenland from Denmark in the past. Harry Truman tested the Danes' resolve in 1945 with a tasty $100 million offer for the 2.2 million square mile island, but was knocked back. Whether Trump intended a straight cash offer for the self-governing territory is unknown, though a part exchange deal with one or more of Alaska, Ohio and Mike Pence moving in the other direction can't be discounted.

By all accounts, Denmark is unlikely to be moved by the overtures, and any talk of a deal presumes Greenland agreeing personal terms and passing a medical.
