Former President Donald Trump took aim at the U.S. women’s national team’s performance in the World Cup, accusing the team of being “openly hostile” to the United States after they were ousted from the major tournament by Sweden.

“The ‘shocking and totally unexpected’ loss by the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team to Sweden is fully emblematic of what is happening to the our once great Nation under Crooked Joe Biden. Many of our players were openly hostile to America - No other country behaved in such a manner, or even close,” Trump shared on Sunday on Truth Social, his social media platform, adding in all-caps that “woke equals failure” and appearing to specifically criticize soccer star Megan Rapinoe.

The team's loss marked the earliest exit it has ever made at a major tournament, reaching the semifinals in all but one World Cup and Olympics.

Trump’s comments are not the first time the former president and Rapinoe have publicly criticized each other. Trump also accused her of being disrespectful in 2019, after a video was posted on social media in which she said she wasn’t going to the White House if the team were to win the Women’s World Cup. The team did win the World Cup tournament later that year.

President Joe Biden applauded the team on Sunday, saying that the athletes have “made your country proud.”

“Congratulations on an incredible run. This team is something special and I’m looking forward to seeing how you continue to inspire Americans with your grit and determination – on and off the field,” Biden shared on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.
