Donald Trump Temporarily Extended Secret Service Privileges for His Adult Children Before Leaving Office

Donald Trump arrived in Florida on Wednesday shortly before his term officially ended, as Biden was being inaugurated in Washington, D.C.

Just before leaving office, former Donald Trump continued his four adult children's Secret Service protection for six months after his presidency, PEOPLE confirms.

A Secret Service source says that Trump, 74, issued the last-minute extension as a "transition period" for Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka Trump (and her husband, Jared Kushner), Eric Trump (and his wife Lara Trump) and Tiffany Trump.

The extension was first reported by The Washington Post.

President Joe Biden would need to approve a further extension after that, the Secret Service source tells PEOPLE.

The source says some other non-Trump family members were also given an extended period of security but could not provide names. The Post reported that former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, Trump's former Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and former National Security Advisor Robert O'Brien were among those granted extended protection.

The Secret Service declined to comment to PEOPLE because the agency "does not discuss protective operations or protectees," a spokesperson said.

A spokeswoman for the Trump Organization also said they would not comment on the family's security.

President Trump and former First Lady Melania Trump will be given Secret Service protection for the remainder of their lives, while the Post reports 14-year-old son Barron will continue receiving protection until he's 16.

Former Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama requested extended protection for their children after leaving office, according to the Post. Chelsea Clinton was 20 and in college when her father's term ended. The Obamas' daughters were teenagers.

President George W. Bush's daughters were 27 when their father left office and did not continue to receive Secret Service protection.

Trump's extension is more unusual because his four oldest children are well into adulthood and not transitioning away from White House life. (The youngest, Tiffany, is 27 and graduated from law school last year. The oldest, Don Jr., is 43.)

By proximity, their own children — Trump's grandchildren — will also receive incidental Secret Service protection.

Ivanka and Kushner, both 39, have three young children. Eric, 37, and Lara, 38, have two young kids. Don Jr. has five children from a previous marriage to Vanessa Trump. The couple divorced in 2018 and Don Jr. now dates Kimberly Guilfoyle, a former Fox News host.

The former president, first lady and their son headed to their private Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida, after leaving the White House this week. Sources have said they are expected to spend much of their immediate future in Florida.

Ivanka and Kushner recently purchased a multimillion dollar property in Miami while simultaneously renovating their residence at Trump International Golf Course in Bedminster, New Jersey, PEOPLE previously reported.

The other Trump children's future plans remain less clear, though Don Jr. and Guilfoyle have been house-hunting in Florida, as has Tiffany, sources said.

A White House source told PEOPLE last month that "the Trump family has many homes and they will be traveling between them."
