A couple months ago, Donald Trump proposed a tariff that would cause wine prices to skyrocket. And while I forgot all about the threat once I'd downed a few glasses myself, the president is back to his old tricks. According to Bloomberg, he reportedly told attendees at his August 9 Hamptons fundraiser (yes, that Stephen Ross event) that he's planning to impose a 100 percent tax on French wines.

Though the outlet notes it's unclear whether he was, in fact, serious about this, he reportedly informed a round table of donors his plans for the retaliation tariff. Which, yes, that's exactly what this would be: revenge.

The move is allegedly in response to French President Emmanuel Macron's tax on multinational technology companies, two sources told Bloomberg. In July, he tweeted his dismay over the situation, writing, "We will announce a substantial reciprocal action on Macron's foolishness shortly. I've always said American wine is better than French wine."

That's when all the threats began, but things are simply escalating.

The Bloomberg report states that on Monday the U.S. Trade Representatives will meet with tech leaders for a public hearing on the tax. This could lead to Robert Lighthizer, AKA the trade boss, in implementing the wine tax.

Either way, time will tell. But dude, couldn't you have chosen a revenge plot that doesn't affect us?? And our booze???? This cuts deep.
