Donald Trump travels to South Korea next month to talk about North Korea

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump will travel to South Korea next month to discuss nuclear negotiations with North Korea, officials said Wednesday, an extension of his trip to Japan for a G-20 summit.

Trump and South Korea President Moon Jae-in "will continue their close coordination on efforts to achieve the final, fully verified denuclearization of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea," White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said.

The two leaders will also discuss ways to strengthen the U.S.-South Korea relationship, Sanders said.

Despite a failed summit in February between Trump and North Korea's Kim Jong Un, Moon has encouraged the two countries to keep negotiating an agreement in which the North would eliminate nuclear weapons programs while the U.S. and allies end economic sanctions on Kim's regime.

Specific dates for Trump's South Korea trip were not announced.

Trump has previously announced plans to attend a Group of 20 nations summit in Osaka, Japan, during the last week in June.

While at the G-20 summit, Trump plans to meet separately with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.

North Korea will also be on the agenda for those talks, officials said.
