Donald Trump 'won't stay at Buckingham Palace during state visit'

Donald Trump has accepted an invitation from the Queen to pay a state visit to the UK in June, but it is understood that he won’t be staying at Buckingham Palace.

The US President and First Lady Melania Trump will visit the UK from June 3 - 5, but there is reportedly no room for the couple and their entourage to stay at the 52-bedroom palace.

This is thought to be because Buckingham Palace is currently undergoing a major ten-year restoration project, estimated to cost taxpayers £365 million.

Repair work on the Royal Family’s London base began in April 2017 to update the property’s electrical cabling, plumbing and heating, which has not been touched since the 1950s.

The next phase began following the Netherlands state visit in October 2018, where around 3,000 Royal Collection items, from works of fine art to everyday furniture, were removed from the East Wing.

According to the palace’s reservicing report, “following the design work, the programme will start in earnest in April 2019 and commence with the East Wing, rotating clockwise around the Palace to the South, South West and North Wings.

“The West Wing and State Apartments will be progressed incrementally throughout the ten years of the programme (two to three State Rooms at a time), so as to enable the Palace to open to over 500,000 visitors over the summer months as usual.”

A senior Palace source told The Mirror: “The entire east wing of the Palace is under reconstruction. Thousands of pieces of pieces from the royal collection have been removed and major plumbing and electrical works are taking place.

“The Belgian Suite, where former President Barack Obama stayed and which is not in the part of the east wing is not closed but the logistics for having people all spread out over the building is just not practical.

“All lunches and state banquets which will host the President and his wife will take place in Buckingham Palace as normal.”

The maintenance work on the palace is expected to be completed by 2027.

Mr and Mrs Trump stayed at the US ambassador’s official residence, Winfield House, in Regent’s Park for their visit in July 2018.

It has not been confirmed where the Trumps will stay for the state visit in June.

Following the announcement of the US State Visit, Twitter users were quick to point out that Mr Trump has already broken royal protocol.

A statement from the White House outlines formal details for their upcoming travel plans, but social media users picked up on the wording.

It reads: “President Donald J. Trump and First Lady Melania Trump accepted the invitation of Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to visit the United Kingdom from June 3 to 5, 2019.”

The Queen is usually referred to as “Her Majesty,” or “Your Majesty,” if individuals meet her in person.

The Trumps previously joined the Queen for tea at Windsor Castle last July.

The President was criticised for breaching royal etiquette by walking in front of the monarch, while inspecting the guard of honour.
