Donaldsonville replaces old water meters; will bring accurate water bills

DONALDSONVILLE, La. (BRPROUD) – After years of planning, Ascension Parish has started to improve the water infrastructure in Donaldsonville by replacing old water meters with new ones.

Through a $4.5 million grant from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Ascension
Parish Water Meter Replacement Project came to life, which will replace over 2,000 old manually read water meters with new remotely read water meters.

“Ascension Parish is one of the fastest growing parishes in Louisiana,” said Colonel Cullen Jones, USACE New Orleans District Commander. “Improving the infrastructure is at the forefront.”

The Mayor of Donaldsonville Leroy Sullivan considers the project impactful and emphasizes the impact on many residents who may deal with inaccurate water bills.

“The bills will be true and that is going to save the customers because they won’t have this up and down in the bills of not having them read accurately,” said Sullivan. “But most importantly, it’s going to be a saving to the parish because they don’t have to have as much manpower going out and reading the meters.”

According to Ascension Parish President Clint Cointment, the Water Meter Replacement Project has been in the works for years and will also help with leaking.

“This will enable early notification of leaks, whether any residents, homes or in our system, leading to a more efficient and proactive water management system,” said Cointment.

Replacements have started already, and 90% of the city will get new meters. While residents wait for their turn, Sullivan sends out a reminder.

“If you see them out in the community, you know, be patient with them because they’re going to have to do some digging and some reconfiguration in order to get the meters installed,” said Sullivan.

In regards to the completion of the project, it’s set to be done by the Spring of 2025.
