Donate winter gloves, score Boise Hawks tickets. Other items sought for those in need

With the frigid temperatures as of late, our noses, toes and fingers are suffering.

Even a quick trip to the mailbox will have your digits aching from the cold if you’re not gloved up.

During the winter months, it’s a struggle to keep toasty, and so much more difficult when you are struggling with homelessness.

To help those who are in need of keeping warm, the Boise Hawks have announced their annual Winter Glove Drive to benefit the Interfaith Sanctuary, which “provides overnight shelter and supportive services for men, women, and families with children,” according to its Facebook page.

Donations of new winter gloves can be made at the Hawks front office at Memorial Stadium, 5600 N. Glenwood St. in Garden City, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday, Jan. 28.

For each new pair of gloves donated, fans will receive a complimentary general admission ticket for the Hawks’ opening-night home game on May 28 against Idaho Falls.

“With Treasure Valley temperatures falling below freezing, we want to make sure we can help as many as we can keep warm with winter gloves,” said Mike Van Hise, Boise Hawks vice president/general manager, in a news release. “For five years, our fans have come out with tremendous support of this program, and we’re hoping for the same this year.”

Winter items needed for those facing homelessness

Another way to keep those less fortunate warm this winter is by donating items to Charitable Assistance to Communities Homeless (CATCH), “a local nonprofit aimed at housing families and individuals experiencing homelessness in the Treasure Valley,” according to a press release.

For those wishing to donate winter hats and gloves, hand warmers, backpacks, and gift cards to gas stations, convenience stores and grocery stores, drop them off from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the downtown CATCH location, 503 S. Americana Blvd. in Boise.

For questions or to arrange CATCH to pick up donations, contact Jeannette Curtis, outreach program director, at 208-391-3298 or jcurtis@catchidaho.org.

Nominate a nonprofit to get donation from pair of Boise restaurants

Fork and Àlavita restaurants in downtown Boise are accepting nominations for a $6,000 donation from their Corkage for Community fund. The donation will go to a commendable Treasure Valley nonprofit organization.

Corkage for Community was created as a means to give back to the Boise community. It allows customers to bring their own wine to the restaurants and pay a $10 corkage fee that benefits the fund, which has generated close to $70,000 since its inception — all donated to local nonprofits.

“It’s a privilege to have the opportunity to donate $6,000 to a local nonprofit through our Corkage for Community Fund,” said Cameron and Amanda Lumsden, owners and founders of Fork and Alavita, in a news release. “Fork and ÀLAVITA have pledged to remain ‘loyal to local’ whenever possible, which includes supporting local nonprofits.”

Nominations for which nonprofit will be the recipient are being accepted on Fork’s Facebook Page (facebook.com/boisefork) until noon Sunday, Feb. 6. They should be less than 75 words, and submissions must be in the form of a Facebook post/comment, rather than a private message.

“Nonprofit organizations, board members, staff, ambassadors and friends can make the nominations on behalf of the nonprofit,” according to the release.

Staff members at the two restaurants will determine the winning Treasure Valley organization, which will be announced on Feb. 11.
