Donations to Wreaths Across America sought to honor veterans in Lakeland cemeteries

LAKELAND — Before getting caught up in the frenzy of holiday shopping, Lakeland residents are being asked to remember and honor the veterans who made it possible.

Four city-owned cemeteries are taking part in the Wreaths Across America program, in which people and companies sponsor wreaths to be placed on the graves of veterans this holiday season.

The Tiger Flowers, Roselawn and Lakeview cemeteries located off Ingraham Avenue and Parker Street are among the city's oldest cemeteries. There are Civil War veterans buried on the grounds, according to the city's website.

The African American Historical Museum of Lakeland Inc. is helping raise sponsorships for the Tiger Flowers, Roselawn and Lakeview cemeteries. A ceremony to include the reading of all veterans' names will be held at noon Dec. 16 with wreath placement to follow.

Sponsorships are also sought for Oak Hill Burial Park, 4620 U.S. 98. It was dedicated in 1926 and has a veteran section within more than 120 developed acres.
