‘Lost everything:’ Neighbors in westside Atlanta apartments still dealing with broken pipes

Neighbors in one apartment complex said they’re still living with damaged apartments. Below freezing temperatures around Christmas caused pipes to break and ceiling to cave in.

Gail Griffin lives at the Oakland Westend Apartments on Oakland Lane in Atlanta. Her ceilings are also caved in and her home was flooded.

“It’s just sad. I done lost everything. The mildew. I’m scared to go into that apartment,” said Gail Griffin.

That apartment has been her home of 30 years. She told Channel 2′s Larry Spruill it all happened the week of Christmas, during the cold weather deep freeze.

Like many people, the pipes inside her home burst. Our cameras captured water still in her carpets.

“I’m just lost. It’s just sad. I’m just really hurt,” said Griffin.

Griffin said she was cooking in her kitchen when she heard the noises. When she looked up, she saw her ceiling had caved in.

“It’s been 10 days and my apartment been like this,” said Griffin.

She said since then, her and her husband have been living with a friend.

“I just packed some clothes. I done lost everything. My husband is on dialysis,” said Griffin

But her apartment is not the only apartment that was damaged from busted pipes.

“No, no, no my place is not the only one. My neighbor right there, she had to leave home because all of the water was going to her apartment. You see the girl right there? Her ceiling fell in. Couple people said their ceilings fell in. This whole unit is messed up,” said Griffin.

But neighbors said they can’t get in contact with the apartment complex.

“They ain’t trying to help me. They ain’t trying to do anything. They know this is going on. I’m trying to be strong, I’m trying. It’s going to be alright, because God is going to make a way,” said Griffin.

Channel 2 tried to get in contact with the complex several times, but they have not gotten back.

Spruill also spoke with City Council members and Fulton County Commissioners. They are aware of what’s going on and will look into this.
