Donetsk prepares for referendum on joining Russia

STORY: Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia provinces are set to hold referendums between 23 and 27 September.

Vladimir Vysotsky, the voting chief, showed reporters ballot boxes made of clear plastic, promising the voting process would be “just as transparent”.

The stations Vysotsky visited on Thursday were, according to his estimation, 100% ready for polling.

Polling station staff were seen being trained for a last minute referendum announced only on September 20.

Russia did not recognize the independence of the Donetsk People's Republic before February 21, 2022.

Ukraine said it would not recognize the results of the new vote.
