Dong, Tech women's golfers win titles in Florida

VIERA, Fla. — Anna Dong earned a three-way share of the individual championship and two teammates posted top-five finishes, leading the Texas Tech women's golf team to the Columbia Classic title on Monday.

Dong shot even-par 72 on Saturday and 70 on Monday, sharing the title at 2-under with Princeton teammates Catherine Rao (73-69) and Yanjun Liu (69-73). The tournament was shortened to 36 holes after high winds led to the cancellation of Sunday's round and scored being discarded after play was under way.

Tech's Shannon Tan (72-71) and Lauren Zaretsky (70-73) tied for fourth place, career-high finishes for the two freshmen. Chiara Horder (76-71) had Tech's last counting score on Monday, and Gala Dumez (72-74) had a counting score in the first round.

Tech finished 5-under and won by five strokes over Princeton in the 14-team event at Duran Golf Club. Tulsa took third at 4-over, followed by Penn State at 12-over and Notre Dame at 13-over.

Playing as individual medalists, Tech's Cecilie Nielsen (72-73) tied for 10th and Libby Fleming (74-74) tied for 20th.

Tech men's golf

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. — Texas Tech's Jack Wall eagled the second hole of a playoff to win the Genesis Invitational Collegiate Showcase on Monday at Riviera Country Club.

Wall earned an amateur exemption into the PGA Tour's Genesis Invitational this week at Riviera. Wall's victory also was worth a $50,000 donation to the Tech men's golf program.

Wall and Kentucky's Alex Goff advanced to the playoff after shooting even-par 71. Both birdied the par-4 No. 10 before Wall eagled the par-5 11th.

Wall is a senior from Brielle, New Jersey, who transferred to Tech this school year from South Carolina.

The field included 19 players from 15 schools. Tech's Ethan Davidson carded a 77.

LCU women's golf

EL PASO — Lubbock Christian University's Prestley Hammond and Alexandra Escamilla were through 14 holes and in the top five when the RJGA Cactus Thaw tournament was suspended because of rain and wind.

Hammond is 5 over par, tied for third place, and Escamilla is 6-over, tied for fifth. The Lady Chaps' Lily Griffin and Aspen Escamilla are 11-over, Griffin through 15 holes and Escamilla through 16. Jordyn Hall is 25-over through 16.

The five-team event is schedule to resume at 10 a.m. CST Tuesday at Painted Dunes Golf Course. Tournament leader Odessa College is 17-over, leading Western New Mexico by 10 strokes and LCU by 16. The University of Texas of the Permian Basin and Fort Lewis are in fourth and fifth.

SPC women's basketball

BORGER — Celia Sumbane scored 20 points and South Plains College squeezed past Frank Phillips College 53-49 Monday night, staying undefeated in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference.

Matilda Soderlund scored 11 and her basket with a little more than eight minutes left put the Lady Texans ahead for good at 43-42. Though South Plains built a 12-0 lead at the outset, no more than five points separated the two teams from the late first quarter on.

South Plains (15-7, 9-0) remained two games up in the loss column on its closest pursuer, No. 23 New Mexico Junior College (19-4, 8-2), which beat Western Texas on Monday.

Sa'Nya Green and Ayuen Akot scored 13 points apiece for Frank Phillips (12-13, 3-6).

SPC men's basketball

BORGER — Jaden Harris had 21 points and six assists, leading No. 16 South Plains College past Frank Phillips College 75-69 for its third consecutive victory in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference.

Christian Coleman and Elijah Tate added 13 and 10 points, respectively, for South Plains (20-5, 8-3).

The Texans remained two games behind the WJCAC leader, No. 4 Odessa College (23-2, 10-1), which won on Sunday at Howard College. SPC is one-half game back of second-place Clarendon College (21-5, 9-3), which beat No. 23 Midland College (21-5, 7-5) on Monday.

Chris Mpaka led Frank Phillips (12-12, 4-7) with 20 points.

Players of week

Lubbock Christian University women's basketball player Grace Foster was named the Lone Star Conference offensive player of the week. The 6-foot-1 sophomore from Childress had 24 points and seven rebounds in a victory at Western New Mexico and 17 points and 10 rebounds in a win at Eastern New Mexico. ...

Wayland Baptist men's basketball player Reece Spencer was named Sooner Athletic Conference player of the week. The 6-5 sophomore from Porter scored 20 points in a win against Oklahoma City University and 22 points in a conquest of John Brown, both on the road. ...

Wayland Baptist baseball player Tyler Wade was named the Sooner Athletic Conference pitcher of the week. The sophomore from Midland struck out 17 with no walks in a 1-0 loss Saturday against Tabor at a tournament in Sterlington, Louisiana. Wade yielded four singles in 6 2/3 innings and lost on an error in the seventh.
