Doniphan County preps for back to school

Aug. 19—ELWOOD, Kansas — St. Joseph's neighbors across the river are preparing for back to school.

The community of Elwood, Kansas, welcomed the Riverside Ministerial Alliance, a group of about seven Christian congregations that serve people throughout Doniphan County and the broader region. The alliance has for several years now held a Back to School event where clothes, classroom basics and other materials needed by local kids for their fall education are on offer.

"It's not just saying something, it's actually an action, our faith in action," said Adam Robidou, pastor of Hope Community Church in Elwood. "And what we're doing is providing a place where people can come, have a good time, eat some food and then receive school supplies and that type of thing. It's just reaching out that community with a love of Christ."

According to alliance volunteer RoxAnne Gee, most of the items for donation were provided by Riverside USD 114, which is based in Wathena, where Riverside High School students attend. Riverside Elementary is in Elwood. The district starts class for the 2023-2024 year on the same day as the St. Joseph School District, which is Monday, Aug. 21.
